Echoes of Fantasy
Echoes of Fantasy (working Title) is my love letter to old school RPGs, full of anime cutscenes, strange locations, colourful characters and tons of unique items and puzzles. The design philosophy behind this game is to create something new that nevertheless feels familiar to players.
The game follows the story of Rud, a young man who has decided to become a great hero, like his father before him. As one would expect though, the local townsfolk are not willing to welcome him as their saviour with open arms, especially since Rud is the only one who seems to remember his father's exploits. Undaunted, Rud sets out to prove his worth and before long meets a large cast of characters and learns that sinister forces are lurking behind his home, the seemingly peaceful Kingdom of Carseldia.
Echoes of Fantasy is being put together with RPG Maker XP, and uses many of that engine's default systems, as I consider them perfect for a retro-stlye RPG. However, all the sprites for the game are unique and there are a number of innovations. Combat, for the most part, is non-random, as enemies can be seen on the various dungeon maps as dark, blobby baddies. Said baddies vary in speed and number, so avoiding them can be a challenge in and of itself.
As the game progresses, the environments become very diverse, featuring all the biomes one would expect from a world-spanning RPG, as well as a number of unique and otherwordly locales.
In classic RPG fashion, there is an overworld to explore. On the overworld, monsters attack randomly, and different groups of monsters will appear in different environments.
I'll be updating this page with new information as work on the project continues. Please check out the accompanying links on the right for more information about the characters and the game world.
